Between the famous cities are towns with one good market, one remarkable temple, and someone who will happily explain both. These are the places our travellers remember longest — and they are easier to reach than most people expect.

Suncheon · Nagan
Walk the intact stone walls of Naganeupseong, a Joseon-era fortress town where a hundred thatched-roof households still live inside — kitchens smoking, vegetable plots tended, village life continuing behind the ramparts.
Korea's folk villages are usually museums; this one is a functioning town that happens to be six hundred years old.
Sokcho · Cheongho-dong
Cross Sokcho's harbour on the gaetbae — a flat ferry you pull across by cable, by hand — into Abai Village, settled by North Korean refugees in the war, and eat the stuffed squid sundae they made famous.
The village is a living piece of division history: first-generation abai (grandfathers) came from the North expecting to go home in weeks, and stayed for life.
Damyang
Cycle or stroll Damyang's Metasequoia-lined Road — a cathedral of hundred-foot redwoods planted in the 70s — then idle through a town that made slowness its brand, bamboo groves and tteok-galbi lunch included.
Damyang joined the international Slow City movement early and meant it; the town is proof that rural Korea can choose its own pace.
Gangneung
Take a small east-coast city at its own speed — Gangneung's Jungang market for potato pancakes, the pine-backed beaches, and an espresso strip where roasters face the sea.
Every Korean city has a story it tells about itself; Gangneung decided to be the town of coffee and sunrise, and pulled it off.
Seosan · Haemieupseong
Wander Haemieupseong fortress, the island hermitage of Ganworam, Gaesimsa temple, the tide-dependent Elephant Rock and — time allowing — the open pastures of Seosan Ranch, one un-touristed landscape after another.
Fortress walls, Baekje-era temples, sea and mudflat, ranchland — all coexisting in one county that most itineraries never reach.
Namwon · Gwanghalluwon
Follow Namwon's layered stories — Gwanghalluwon garden of the Chunhyang love tale, the disused Seodo Station, the hornbeam village forest and Jirisan Herb Valley.
A classical romance, an old railway, village woods and Jirisan's slopes all remain as real places you can walk.
Gunsan · Gyeongam-dong
Trace Gunsan's overlapping eras — the Modern History Museum and old customs house, Dongguksa temple, the railway village of Gyeongam-dong, the Chowon photo studio of film fame, and Daejangbong across the water.
Colonial-era architecture, film locations, a train track through a neighbourhood — different decades of Korea left standing side by side.
Incheon · Gaehang-ro
Skip Wolmido and Chinatown for Dongincheon's old quarter — the second-hand book alley, Sinpo Market, Gaehang-ro's ageing shopfronts turned cafés and studios, and a stroll up Jayu Park.
An open-port city's old downtown rediscovered by new local makers — urban discovery, not sightseeing.
Mokpo · Seosan-dong
Walk the 1897 open-port quarter — both Modern History Museums, colonial-era architecture, then the poetry-painted lanes of Seosan-dong up to Borimadang — following the port city's timeline on foot.
The modern-era buildings and lived-in hillside alleys overlap in the real downtown, not a recreated set — the city's time made visible.
Nonsan · Ganggyeong
From Ganggyeong Station, walk the old Hanil Bank (now the history hall), the labour-union building, modern-era pharmacies and churches, up Ongnyeobong to the river port — the rise and quiet of what was once one of Joseon's great markets.
Bank, union hall, pharmacy: workaday modern heritage packed into a small river town — the story of what remains after a city shrinks.
Sancheong · Suseonsa
Walk slowly through this small temple on Jirisan's Ungseokbong slopes — lotus pond, tended gardens, forest edges — and rest at the temple café; templestay possible by arrangement.
Not a monumental heritage temple but today's temple landscape — small, gardened, hydrangeas by the pond — perfectly matched to small-town pace.
Hadong · Samseonggung
At 850m in Jirisan, walk among Samseonggung's thousands of stone towers, sotdae poles, ponds and mountain paths — a sanctuary honouring Korea's founding myth, beside the famously unworldly village of Cheonghak-dong.
Neither temple nor folk village: a modern reconstruction of ancient spirit-culture set deep in the mountains, with a worldview and visuals like nowhere else.
Naju · Geumseonggwan
Browse Naju Moksa Goeul market's produce and banchan, then walk Geumseonggwan and the old administrative quarter to the gomtang street — Joseon provincial capital and living market layered in one downtown.
Market and monuments are not separated here: the centuries-old market culture, the governor's hall and the local beef soup all sit within one walk.
